Short Papers and Interactive Posters Co-Chairs

Michael J. Muller, U S WEST Advanced Technologies, USA
Manfred Tscheligi, University of Vienna, Austria

Short Papers and Interactive Posters show late-breaking results and ongoing work or finished results which can best be presented either in lecture format (Short Paper) or in an interactive format (Interactive Poster). Their only difference is in terms of the author(s)' preference regarding how to present the materials.

In keeping with the conference theme of Common Ground, we especially encourage work that

Short Papers are a valuable opportunity to showcase both research and practice in HCI problems, needs, and solutions, without the demands of a formal paper structure. A Common Ground between research and practice can be established by learning from real world problems.

Interactive Posters provide an excellent way to establish the Common Ground immediately during the presentation. Interactivity means mutual education of presenters and participants, by approaching their problems from different viewpoints and from different disciplines. The conference will provide the explicit opportunity to show the Common Ground developed during the time of presentations. We solicit Interactive Posters which have the potential of interactive establishment of Common Grounds.

Suites of Short Papers or Interactive Posters

At CHI 96, in addition to the conventional individual submissions, we are for the first time inviting sets or Suites of interrelated Short Papers and Interactive Posters.

For Short Paper Suites, we encourage sets of four to six papers that are unified by taking diverse perspectives on a common theme. Accepted Short Paper Suites will be presented in a single paper session, and may include a brief introduction and/or a brief summary by a designated discussant.

For Interactive Poster Suites, we encourage sets of up to eight posters that are unified by taking diverse perspectives on a common theme. Accepted Interactive Poster Suites will be grouped together in a floor-space configuration that will encourage comparison and discussion, and may include a smaller poster that introduces or discusses the posters in the Suite.

The review process for Suites will involve, first, an accept/reject decision of the entire set. In the event of a reject decision for the set, then each component submission will be considered as an individual submission on its own merits.

Review Process

Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of experts in the field using the standard CHI criteria: originality, importance and generality of contribution, soundness of rationale or demonstration, quality of written and graphic presentation, and adequate citation of relevant literature.

Format

Conference Companion Summary.

For each short paper or interactive poster, prepare a two page camera-ready summary, suitable for publication in the CHI 96 Conference Companion. The summary must be in the Conference Proceedings format, and must contain the title, authors, contact information, keywords, abstract, body, and references.

Poster Sketch.

For an interactive poster, prepare also a sketch of the poster. We prefer a one-page bird's eye view of the overall poster layout, rather than many pages of detailed contents.

Conference Companion Suite Summary.

For a suite of short papers or interactive posters, prepare a one-page camera ready summary in the Conference Proceedings Format that explores the common ground or diversity of the Suite.

Authors of Summaries ONLY may choose to omit the Abstract and Keywords required in the Conference Proceedings Format.

Electronic Version.

Electronic versions of accepted short papers, interactive posters and suite Summaries will be published on the CHI 96 CD-ROM. They are due at the same time as the rest of the submission.

The electronic version of the Summary must be provided on a disk (PC or Mac). The disk should have a label indicating the disk's type (PC or Mac), the primary author, the title of the submission, and the format of the file on the disk. Acceptable formats are listed on Cover Page Three. Make sure that you indicate also the format of electronic submission on Cover Page Three.

Please note that publication schedules do not permit revisions of any materials for the CHI 96 Conference Companion and the CHI 96 CD-ROM. If the submission is accepted, the Conference Companion Summaries (two-pages for short papers and interactive posters, one-page for Suites) will be printed for the Conference Companion and copied on the CD-ROM in the form form in which each was received.

We therefore encourage authors to take the time to perfect their descriptions, both for the quality of the publication and the likelihood of acceptance.

Upon Acceptance

Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by the end of January 1996.

Summaries of accepted short papers or interactive posters will be published in the CHI 96 Conference Companion and on the CHI 96 CD-ROM.

For accepted suites, the suite summary and the summaries building the suite will be published as a separate unit in the CHI 96 Conference Companion and on the CHI 96 CD-ROM.

At the Conference

Each accepted Short Paper will have approximately eight to ten minutes for formal presentation, plus very brief questions.

Each accepted Interactive Poster will have display space (approximately 2.5 m by 1.2 m), with a table for other materials, optionally including an informal demonstration and/or videotape. Interactive Poster author(s) will be expected to be present at scheduled times for informal discussions at their posters.

Last Minute Submissions

Proposals of Short Papers or Interactive Posters that arrive after the due date may be accepted (on the basis of co-chair review) for a limited number of poster displays or short paper presentations which may be held open for "last minute submissions". There will be no formal publication of these materials. The space will be used for work with pressing issues necessary to present it.

Last minute submissions in both categories should arrive at one of the co-chairs not later than 5.00 p.m (17:00) local time on February 16.
