CHI 96 Technical Program (from the CHI 96 Web, https://chi1996.acm.org/) ********************************** Tuesday, 9:00 am - 10:30 am ********************************** Opening Plenary: Arranging to Do Things With Others Herbert H. Clark, Stanford University Much of what we do we do with other people. We conduct business, gossip, play games, and take classes with others, both in person and through computers. Joint activities like these are advanced through sequences of brief joint actions. The problem is this: it takes delicate coordination against the common ground of the participants to initiate such actions. Person A has to arrange for person B (1) to commit to taking part (2) in a particular joint action (3) in a particular role (4) at a particular time and place. I will argue that people have principled ways of solving this problem, and that designers can and should leverage these principles when supporting these activities through computers and other technologies. Clark is a professor of psychology at Stanford University. He has long been interested in the social foundations of language use. With colleagues, he has worked on such issues as common ground, collaboration in reference, linguistic and nonlinguistic forms of signaling, joint projects in discourse, and disfluences in spontaneous speech. Clark earned his BA at Stanford and his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins and taught at Carnegie-Mellon before going to Stanford. He is the author of over 100 published papers and chapters, co-author with Eve V. Clark of Psychology and Language (HBJ, 1977), and the author of Arenas of Language Use (Chicago Univesity Press, 1992) and Using Language (Cambridge University Press, 1996). ******************************** Tuesday, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm ******************************** **Invited Contribution: Technological Windows into Mind There is More in Eyes and Brains for Human-Computer Interaction Session Chair: Judy Hammond, University of Technology, Sidney Boris M. Velichkovsky, Dresden University of Technology, Germany We may be well on the eve of profound changes in CHI, and these changes will be brought about by the recent technological development in the field of cognitive neurosciences. The emerging perspective is that of subjective telematics. I am going to discuss -- and to demonstrate -- some of these perspectives concentrating on two following domains: Brain Imaging and, particularly, Imaging Eye-Tracking. At this new phase in the evolution of computer technologies it will be possible to take into account not just some characteristics of average human beings, but create systems sensitive to the actual states and intentions of interacting persons. Boris M. Velichkovsky is professor of Cognitive Ergonomics and Head of Applied Cognitive Research Unit at the expanding Dresden University of Technology, Germany. His books include Knowing and Acting (Berlin, 1988), Computers and Cognition: Essays on Cognitology (Moscow, 1990), Language and Communication: Their Evolution, Development, and Change over Time (together with Duane Rumbaugh - Hillsdale, NJ, 1996). He has delivered keynote addresses to several international congresses and has organized a number of conferences and symposia, including INTERACT95. **Papers: Learning From Users Session Chair: Thomas P. Session Chairs: Terry Winograd, Stanford University J. Andrew Magpantay, American Library Association The institution of the library has served as a common ground for society, a place where all citizens, regardless of their background or socio-economic status, could come to search for and find the information they need to enrich and enhance their lives. As with other segments of society, librarianship is undergoing a transition and transformation as computing and telecommunications technologies evolve, converge, and affect the way information is produced, distributed, and made accessible. Libraries are continually incorporating these new technologies as part of their basic services and introducing these technologies to more and more people. This evolution has sparked discussion within the library community about the notion of a "virtual library" and how this concept might be realized. For while computing and telecommunications technologies present new and powerful ways to meet users' information needs, they also can magnify the problems of organizing and making information accessible. Furthermore, some of the current economics and proposed policies surrounding these new technologies threaten to undermine the concept of a common ground where all citizens can participate fully in a free and open information society. J. Andrew Magpantay is Director of the American Library Association's Office for Information Technology Policy in Washington, D. C., which was established in June of 1995. This office provides policy development and analysis for ALA's legislative and public policy agenda in the areas of technology and telecommunications. Magpantay has held positions as special assistant for innovative projects and planning at the University of California, San Francisco, and as computer systems manager at the Earl Gregg Swem Library at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Magpantay was also visiting librarian at the William R. Perkins Library at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina, where he worked on issues related to technology and reference services. He has worked as a programmer on several projects at the University of California, Los Angeles and has been a staff researcher for the California Public Utilities Commission Task Force on Telecommunications Network Infrastructure and a reviewer for the U.S. Department of Commerce's Telecommunications Information Infrastructure Assistance Program. **Design Briefings: Small Objects of Desire Session Chair: Karen Bedard, Hyundai Electronics America Sensuality in Product Design: A Structured Approach G.H. The trend toward computer-graphic displays of complex data seems to indicate a new area of common ground for verbal, analytic and visual, perceptual modes of thinking. As computers take over more and more "left brain" tasks, educators are beginning to recognize the need for training the visual mode of thinking as well as the verbal, analytic mode -- the traditional "3Rs" of schooling. Compared with what we are capable of seeing, perceiving, and envisioning, what we actually see is doubtless very limited. By cultivating perceptual skills, we can perhaps increase our ability to derive meaning from complex verbal and numerical information and to accomplish creative leaps of insight.
