CHIkids: A Common Ground for Kids and Adults
Allison Druin, University of New Mexico, USA
CHIkids challenges the traditional notion of childcare and rolls
summer camp, technology, and CHI into one exciting new experience for
children (and adults too).
CHIkids will be a place
-
that offers CHI researchers the rare opportunity to work with and
observe children of all ages enjoying new learning experiences with
technology.
-
that offers children a creative, innovative program as challenging
and exciting as the CHI 96 conference is for their parents.
-
that offers CHI parents the flexibility of managed childcare with
the option of technological exploration for their children.
Types of Activities
Individuals, educational organizations, and companies that would like
to focus on projects that involve kids in innovative educational
technological experiences are encouraged to submit short proposals in
the following areas:
Technology Workouts.
This area offers the opportunity for new technologies and user
interfaces to be tested with children of all ages. Four, one-hour
time-slots will available each day in the afternoons, for the five
days of the CHI conference for CHI researchers to bring their work to
be used with children. Submit a two-page summary of your work which
includes authorsU contact information, technology summary, the number
of one-hour time-slots you are interested in (you can choose multiple
one-hour lots on one day, or on multiple days), the hardware/software
you would bring, and the hardware/software you might require.
CD-ROM Field Trips.
This area offers children the opportunity to explore various CD-ROM
products. Multimedia CD-ROM authors are asked to submit their
products to be used by children each morning throughout the five days
of CHI 96. Submit a one-page summary describing the product(s) you
would like to lend to this area. Multiple CD-ROM submissions will be
welcomed. Authors do not have to be present at CHIkids during the
conference to submit a CD-ROM product. However, daily volunteers to
work with children will be most welcome!
Multimedia Storytelling / CHIkids Newsroom.
These areas will offer older children (7 years and up) the opportunity
to be authors of their own multimedia experiences. CHI experts in
multimedia authoring and/or desktop will be needed daily to work with
CHIkids on projects ranging from creating a CHIkids conference
newsletter, to creating their first multimedia story. If you are
interested in volunteering to be a CHIkids Leader in Multimedia
Storytelling or the CHIkids Newsroom, please submit a one-page summary
which includes your contact information, your experience (if any)
working with children, what CHIkids area you are interested in, and
how much time you expect to have to volunteer during the CHI 96
conference.
